Acetylcysteine (NAC):
N-acetyl-L-(+)-cysteine - CAS[616-91-1] is a simple molecule with the formula C5H9NO3S and a molecular weight of 163.19. It has a melting point of 109-112 °C.
Purity: (S)
Acetylcysteine is a free available drug. There are a lot of generic brands (generica). Purity plays an important role, because one can smell the odor of rotten eggs (from decomposition and impurities - L-Cystine, L-Cysteine, N,N-Diacetylcystine, N,S-Diacetylcysteine). Around 60% of the brands on the german marktet had the "hydrogen sulfide syndrome". (LINK)Purity can be determined via HPLC and CE or MS. Please go to NAC literature.
Glutathione precursor:
N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is precursor of glutathione (GSH). The acetyl rest is tributed to a tissue friendly behaviour. Also solubility problems play a role. NAC can easily be deacetylated to cysteine, an important precursor of cellular glutathione synthesis.
